Gladys Burchfield

Waynesville – Gladys Barker Burchfield, 98, formerly of Lenwood Drive, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Haywood Lodge.

Gladys was a native of Swain County and a daughter of the late Fred Barker and Oma Phillips Barker Green.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Buford Burchfield, who died in 2014; daughter, Louise Christopher; two sisters; and one brother.  Gladys was a local newspaper carrier and worked at Hazelwood Elementary School cafeteria.  She was a member of New Hope Church of God and loved reading, sewing, cooking, and was a wonderful host to her friends and family.

She is survived by a grandson, Greg Christopher (Sherri); a granddaughter, Sherri Green (John); and six great-grandchildren, Emily Christopher, Chad Christopher (Lydia), Abigail C. Aldinger (Josh), James Green, Luke Green, and Logan Green.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Alan Greene officiating.  Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
