Gladys Smathers Davis, age 93, died Friday, October 26, 2007, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the daughter of the late William Sidney and Maggie Thompson Smathers. She was preceded in death by three husbands, James Smith, Horace "Con" Medford, and Brantley Davis; an infant son, James Robbie Smith; and several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Davis worked at Wingate College as a house mother. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she held various offices with the WMU and was a Sunday School teacher. She volunteered for many years with Haywood Christian Ministries. She is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Smith of Canton; a brother, J. B. Smathers of Pasadena, TX; four grandchildren, Terry Dale Thompson of Plantation, FL, James Robbie Thompson and his wife, Thelma, of Aiken, SC, Renee Lynette Thompson and her husband, Kevin Israel, of Canton, and Tamara Medford and her husband, Gene, of Clyde; three great-grandchildren, Bryan Austin Thompson, Steven Dalton Thompson, and Dominique Destry Medford; a special nephew, Dale Burrell of Kennesaw, GA, special caregivers, Kevin Israel, Sissy Brooks, and Jessica Garnes; and the staff of Silver Bluff Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, 2007, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Old Thickety Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
