Candler - Glenn William Stamey, age 91, died Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at VA Hospice Center. He was born May 17, 1914 in Ellijay, Georgia and resided in Haywood County until 1955 and then resided in Buncombe County until his death. He was the son of the late Loran and Gertrude Griffith Stamey. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Rae Stamey; a brother, Melvin Stamey; three sisters, Katheryn Howard, Pauline Pressley, and Hazel Stamey and two infant brothers. He retired from Champion International with 42 years of service. Mr. Stamey was a faithful member, former deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Pole Creek Baptist Church for 50 years. He served on the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board for 20 years and lead numerous mission trips across the eastern coast of the United States. He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II with the 51st Combat Engineers. He was happily married to his wife of 63 years, Margaret Jones Stamey, and is also survived by two daughters, Peggy Ferguson and her husband, Tommy of Candler and Pat Sexton and her husband, Bruce of Candler and Dunkirk, IN; a brother, Gene Stamey and his wife, JoAnn of Canton; six grandchildren, Becky Payne and her husband, Kevin, Mike Sexton and his wife, Debbie, Brett Ferguson and his wife Juliana, Kevin Sexton and his wife, Keri, Amy Anderson and her husband, Mark and Ase Midveit Thomas and her husband, Chris from Hamar, Norway and ten great-grandchildren, Heath, Carson and Dalton Payne, Corey and Taylor Sexton, Kylie, Cole and Kloyee Anderson and Connor and Luke Sexton. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Pole Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Thurman, Reverend G. W. Jameson and Reverend Wayne Fagala officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the services at the "Home Going" Reception in the church fellowship hall. Pallbearers will be grandchildren and their spouses. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pole Creek Baptist Church Mission Team, 96 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.
