Gordon Newton

February 15, 1921 — November 6, 2010

Waynesville, Gordon Bartlett Newton, age 89, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Smokey Mountain Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. A native of Lempster, New Hampshire, Newton moved from California to Waynesville, North Carolina in 1990 to be in the mountains he loved and resided there for the last 19 years. Gordon was the son of the late Freeman George and Maude Gladys Bartlett Newton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Olivia Hassard Newton, who died in 1972; a grandson, Aaron Bartlett Newton and a sister, Irene Martha Veaudry. He was a 32-year Navy veteran, Pearl Harbor survivor, and fought in every major battle of the Pacific (during which he was granted temporary rank of Lt. Cmdr.) plus the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He is survived by two sons, Gordon F. Newton and his wife, Patricia, of Louisville, Kentucky and Kenneth B. Newton and dear friend, Karen Kreitzburg, of Waynesville; sister, Norma Esbenshade of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Michelle Bulda and her husband, Richard, of San Diego, California and Jonathan Newton and Emily Newton, both of Louisville, Kentucky; and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Kendall Bulda of San Diego, California. Gordon was a Saturday morning "regular" at Joey's Pancake House and could frequently be seen on the walking paths of Waynesville Club. He also regularly visited Waynesville Middle School to share friendship, good humor, and classroom presentations on World War II. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty to his country, devotion to his family, self-sacrifice, and the respect of all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Charles "Chuck" Wilson officiating.
