Waynesville-Gordon Cecil Raines, age 76, of 113 Cochran Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 13, 2004. He passed away at home after an extended illness surrounded by his family. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William Raines and Mary Lou Medford Raines Curtis. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy and Albert Raines. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 47 and VFW Post 5202. He mowed yards and raked leaves for more than 22 years and loved his dogs, car racing and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jean Higgins Raines; a daughter, Diane Raines, of Tennessee; three sons, Ronnie Raines of Waynesville and Donald Ray and Billy Joe Raines of Tennessee; a step-son, Joe Higgins, of the home; a sister, Margaret Ray, of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one step great granddaughter; a special niece, Darlene Inman, of Waynesville; and Betty Rathbone, a long-time friend and guardian angel of the family. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Mark Elkins and Reverend Peggy Elkins officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military services being conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Darren Inman, Brian and Shawn Aldridge, Roger Frasier, Jeff Dyer, Robbie Reece, Jason Haney, and Russell Salter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC or Haywood County EMS, 215 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
