Gregory Scott "Scotty" Cochran, age 40, died Sunday, May 31, 2009. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of Buddy and Janice Mehaffey Cochran of Waynesville. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Dewey and Lula Belle Morgan Cochran; maternal grandfather, Robert Mehaffey; and a nephew, Levi Wade. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he taught the High School Boys Sunday School Class and worked with the youth group. Scotty was a 1987 graduate of Tuscola High School and was awarded the American Farmhand Award through Future Farmers of America. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 14 years, Heather Phillips Cochran; a sister, Karen Wade and her husband, Darren, of Crabtree; maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Authorine Smathers of Waynesville; grandmother-in-law, Jean "Mimi" Shipman of Clyde; mother-in-law, Pam Shipman Phillips of Clyde; father-in-law, Eddie Phillips of Canton; a niece, Courtney Wade of Crabtree; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Pallbearers will be Darren Wade, Sam Cochran, Ralph Messer, Mark Stephenson, Jeff Worley, Tim Worley, Dusty Phillips, Max Palmer, and Ed Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be High School Boys Sunday School Class of Bethel Baptist Church. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Pam Phillips, 57 Todd Road, Clyde, NC.
