Grover Mease

Grover Clayton "G. C." Mease, Jr., age 82, died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at VA Medical Center in Asheville. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Grover Clayton and Jessie Williams Mease. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Cagle, Ruth Ryder; and a brother, Carrel Mease. He retired from Champion International with 42 years of service. G. C. was a member of West Canton Baptist Church and a charter member of the Haywood County Rescue Squad as a sergeant. He was a United States Navy veteran serving in the Pacific. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn Frady Mease; a daughter, Cathy Colleen Free of Canton; a sister, Adeline Ballard of Canton; three brothers, Bobby Joe, Kenneth and Buford Mease all of Canton; two grandchildren, Tara Smathers and Jillian Ramey; and five great-grandchildren; Ethan and Aaron Smathers, Deanna, Jacob, and Daniel Ramey. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Joe Steadman, Reverend Wallace Britt, and Reverend W. O. Henson officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
