Gudger Shipman

Gudger Thomas Shipman, age 70, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Vinson and Bonnie Green Shipman. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Stroupe and an infant sister, Christine Shipman. Ever since he was a little boy, Gudger wanted to be a truck driver. Eventually that dream came true. He was a truck driver for over 20 years. Gudger loved spending his years of retirement at Lake Chatuge fishing with friends. He was a United States Army veteran and very much enjoyed his time stationed in Germany. He is survived by a son, Thomas Dale Shipman of Arlington, WA; a daughter, Kristie White and her husband, David, of Fletcher; a sister, Betty Lane and her husband, Bill, of Canton; and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010, at Long's Community Cemetery with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 89, P.O. Box 331, Canton, NC 28716.
