Waynesville, Guy McKinley Messer, Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Brian Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William H. and Nora Viola Haney Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Alfred Messer and Joe Messer and one sister, Maxine Clark. He retired from Lea Industries and also worked in construction. He loved baseball, especially watching the Atlanta Braves and Pisgah Football. He enjoyed talking and engaging with others and never met a stranger. He was an avid outdoorsman and raised chickens. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edna S. Messer; two daughters, Vickie Conard and her husband, James, and Donna Messer and her fiancé, Ray Trantham, all of Waynesville; a son, Junior Messer and his fiancé, Darla, of Waynesville; three sisters, Edna Rowland of Asheville, Martha Sue Messer and her husband, Jerry, of Canton, and Mary Jane Collins and her husband, Roger, of Danville, VA; three grandchildren, Luke and Trashay Messer, and Amanda Owens and her husband, Joey; four great-grandchildren, Casey Owens, Noah and Adam Brown, and David Robinson; step grandchildren, Jamie Haney and Jennifer Hannah, and Amber and Logan Hightower; and a special family member, Mary Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2008 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Wayne Carson and Reverend Roger Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.
