Harley Stiles

September 16, 1930 — March 8, 2016

Canton – Harley Donald "Don" Stiles, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Silver Bluff Village in Canton. Don was born in Haywood County to the late Harley and Dorinda Stiles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Glenna Warren Stiles; a son, Warren Lee Stiles; a brother, Ted Stiles; and a sister, Evelyn Pless. Don graduated with the class of 1950 from Canton High School. Upon graduation, Don went to work for Champion Paper and Fiber Company as an apprentice welder. In 1952, Don entered the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he served for two years. After his military service, Don returned to Canton where he went back to work for Champion Paper and Fiber Company. Don retired from Champion International Paper after 44 years. He served as the assistant Scout Master to Troop 316 at the First United Methodist Church of Canton, Fire Chief at Champion International, and a member of the board of directors at Champion Credit Union. Don was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canton. He is survived by two children and spouses: Ward and Glena Stiles, and Norma and Edwin Warren; four grandchildren and spouses, Meredith and Jon Doehling, Laurel and Marcus Woody, Captain Jonah Warren of the USMC and Katie, Jacob and Betty Warren; six great-grandchildren, Ada Doehling, Emma, Eli and Caleb Warren, and Benjamin Don and Andrew Warren; one brother, Bruce Stiles of Richfield, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, Gene "Sonny" and his wife, Ann Warren, of Franklin; and lifelong friend and "loafing" buddy, Joe Brookshire. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2016 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Pastor Jason Miller and Reverend Erin Michelle Weaver officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of Don's men's Sunday school class and close friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Men's Sunday school class of First United Methodist Church of Canton.
