Harley Wright, Jr.

December 25, 1930 — October 20, 2013

Harley Estus "H.E." Wright, Jr., passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013. AA native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Harley Estus Wright, Sr. and Bessie Lee Rice Wright. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Jimison; and one brother, Max Wright. H.E. was a veteran of the United States Army. Upon his return from active duty, he worked for his father, Harley E. Wright, Sr., owner and publisher of the Canton Enterprise. Prior to his retirement in 1995, Harley was employed in Quality Control with Champion Paper & Fiber Company with 36 years service. He enjoyed being an active member of Snug Harbor. H.E. was a trustee for the North Canton Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church. Motorcycles, horseback riding, farming, restoration of a 1926 Model T Ford, and collecting various antiques were among many things he enjoyed. He will always be remembered as an excellent mechanic. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Mason Wright; a daughter, Melissa Truitt and her husband, Tom, of Lake Junaluska; three sons, Bob Wright and his wife, Polly, of Decatur, Alabama, Carl Wright and his wife, Jill, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Lee Wright and his wife, Janet, of Savannah, Tennessee; ten grandchildren, Josh Wright, Carol Johnson, Wesley, Alex, Natalie, Alan, Taylor, and Robbie Wright, Luke and Lyndsey Kinsland; two step-grandsons, Brandon and Austin Truitt; four great-grandchildren, Emeri , Maddox, Selah, and John Wesley Wright; and one step great-granddaughter, Grace Johnson. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Wayne Carson and Reverend James Johnson (grandson-in-law) officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Canton Area Historical Museum, 36 Park Street, Canton, NC 28716.
