Leicester- Harold Herbert Black, age 82, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, June 18, 2007 at St. Josephs Hospital. He was a native of Buncombe County, but lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was a son of the late, Leslie Dennis and Vernie Mae Rogers Black. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Scott Clark Black, who died in 1988; two brothers, Clifford and Frank Black, and two sisters, Alice Murray and Pauline Reeves. Harold graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Chemistry. He then worked as a chemist for Champion International where he retired. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school. He coached little league baseball and delivered Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. He loved to read and was a member of the Rough Creek cloggers where he traveled the world to perform. Harold was a United States Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Battle of the Bulge as a paratrooper. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Pearl Wells Black, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Ebeneezer Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Steve Robinson and Reverend Ed Worley officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. At other times the family will be at the residence of Beth Shook, 178 Willow Creek Road, Leicester, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Payne's Chapel Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 1134, Leicester, NC 28748.
