Harold Crawford

May 14, 1932 — December 4, 2003

Bryson City-Harold Dean Crawford, age 71, of Greasy Branch and Waynesville, died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Mission St. Joseph Health Care System.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of Wiley E. and Lucille Hill Crawford. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Steve Dayton. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was employed by BASF as a chemist for 40 years before retiring in 1991. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Bryson City. He was an avid flower gardener, was active in his church, and enjoyed spending time at Fontana Lake with his dog, Leo.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mildred Dayton Crawford; a daughter, Stephanie Shipman and her husband, Bill, of Candler; a stepdaughter, Karen Dayton McCarty and her husband, Richard, of Tupelo, Mississippi; a son, Jeff Crawford, and his wife, Brenda, of Fletcher, NC; Jeff's mother, Virginia Jameson, of Asheville; a brother, Wallace W. Crawford, and his wife, Dicie, of Bristol, Tennessee; and two granddaughters, Jamie Dayton and Emily Shipman.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Clegg officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 6541 Grassy Branch Road, Bryson City, NC 28713.
