Harriett Penny

Maggie Valley, Harriett Davis Penny, age 88, passed away on Friday, September 02, 2011 at Silver Bluff Village. A native of Union, South Carolina, she was a lifelong resident of Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late Virgil R. and Nora Woody Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Everett Penny; a son, Steven Wayne Penny; one sister, Ruth Davis Walther; and one brother, Lt. Hugh R. Davis. Harriett worked as an LPN prior to becoming a parent counselor for Southwestern Child Development. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Penny Cathey and her husband, John Hawkins, of Waynesville; three sons, Hugh Randolph Penny and his wife, Darlene, of Columbia, South Carolina, John Everett Penny, Jr. of Maggie Valley and Jay Woody Penny, of Greenville, South Carolina. She was a devoted and beloved mother and grandmother to seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2011 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
