Harris Thomas Sorrells, age 85, of H. T. Drive left his earthly body for his heavenly home on Friday, January 23, 2009, at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Jospeh LaFate and Emma Harris Sorrells. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Cora Hutchison Sorrells; one son, Tommy L. Sorrells; and a sister, Mary Louise Robinson. Mr. Sorrells spent his life dedicated to his family as a husband, father, and Papaw. He loved his church and his church family at Oak Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. All who knew him, knew him for his love and kindness. He was a dedicated worker with the Baptist Men on many mission trips and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Boxer. He is survived by three daughters, Hilda Leatherwood and her husband, Walt, Martha McCracken and her husband, Mike, and Betty Sims all of Clyde; one brother, Roy Lee Sorrells of Canton; two sisters, Bonnie Carver of Canton and Emma Jo Buckner of Morristown, TN. Mr. Sorrells was Papaw to 10 grandchildren: Stephanie Kuykendall, Denise, Tara, and Frank Leatherwood, Mark, Matthew, and Michael McCracken, Michelle Davis, Charly Sims and Tommy H. Sorrells and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
