Hattie Jones

Waynesville, Hattie Eloise Swayngim Jones, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 at her residence in Ratcliffe Cove. She was the daughter of the late John Boone and Eunice Jenkins Swayngim. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Walker Jones, who died in 1981, a brother, James William Swayngim, and a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Swayngim Jones. Hattie retired from L.N. Davis Insurance Company after 44 years of service. Following her retirement, she volunteered for Haywood Christian Ministries for eleven years where she was known for her thoughtfulness and gracious smile. Hattie was very devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a fan of Tarheel basketball and also loved her flowers and reading. She enjoyed traveling and taking tours to several areas in the United States and Canada. Hattie was the oldest living member of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church and served in many capacities in the church including Secretary to the Administrative Council and was also a member of the WSCS and the Seminar Sunday School Class. She is survived by her daughters, Arby J. Brandt and Linda Ballance and her husband, Bobby, all of Waynesville; seven grandsons; two granddaughters; thirteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and three nieces. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Mackey, Reverend Mike Shuford, and Reverend Karen Mowe officiating. Burial will be in Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Chris Ballance, Tray Ballance, Nalan Brandt, Jody Brandt, Jason Brandt, Rod Brandt, and Bart Brandt. Honorary pallbearers will be the Seminar Class of Elizabeth Chapel and Dr. George Brown. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the services at the church and at other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Linda Ballance, 1170 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville. Memorials may be made to the ARC of Haywood County, 407 Welch Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, or Haywood Christian Ministries, 150 Branner Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
