Waynesville-Hattie Mae Phillips Messer, age 90, of Riddle Drive, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Rachel Carver Phillips. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert James Messer, who died in September of 2001; a daughter, Barbara "Bobbie" Warren; two brothers, Roy and Ervin Phillips; a sister, Mary Lewis; a daughter-in-law, Merl Messer; and two son-in-laws, Elmer Inman and Billy Warren. She and her husband owned and operated Messer's Grocery on Lake Logan Road for over 26 years. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Inman of Canton and Elizabeth Riddle and her husband, T.L. of the Bethel Community; a son, Jack Messer of Canton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Roy Kilby and Reverend Stacy Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Inman's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and at other times, the family will be at the home of T. L. and Elizabeth Riddle, 32 Riddle Drive, Waynesville. Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
