Hayes Coggins

Balsam, Hayes W. Coggins went to be with his Lord on August 9th 2016 The son of Western and Callie Coggins, he was born on May 6, 1932 in Cullowhee, NC. He retired from Western Carolina University. After his retirement, he enjoyed working for several years at the Balsam Mountain Preserve. He was a US Army veteran, a faithful Christian, who served as a deacon of Balsam Baptist Church and a board member of the Balsam Willets Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Doris Coggins and his parents, three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his four children, Donald Coggins and his wife, Susie, of Balsam, Kathy Smith and her husband, Jerry, of Waynesville, Ron Coggins and his wife, Wanda, of Balsam, Tim Coggins and his wife, Vicki, of Augusta, Georgia and one sister, Myrtle Extine, of Sylva. He was the proud Papaw of 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Balsam Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Farmer and Reverend Ted Reeves officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Balsam Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Haywood County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Balsam Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 280, Balsam, NC 28779.
