Waynesville, Hazel Josephine Valentine Betts, age 84, currently residing in Griffin, GA, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough, GA. A native of South Carolina, she was a former resident of Detroit, MI before moving to Haywood County in 1987. She was the daughter of the late Arlie and Della Mae Hartsell Valentine. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson Betts, Jr., who died in 1992 and her brother, Carl Valentine. She was a waitress for Stouffers Restaurant in Detroit Michigan for more than 27 years. She enjoyed the game of golf and was part of a ladies golf group at Lake Junaluska Golf Course and was also an avid bowler. Hazel loved to play the card game "Canasta" and also enjoyed visiting casinos. She was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee Women's Basketball Team and a life-long fan of the Detroit Tigers. She is survived by one son, Daniel Betts (Colleen) of Omaha, NE; two daughters, Carolyn Schwesinger(Richard) of Griffin, GA and Cynthia Lanning of Waynesville; three brothers, Frank Valentine (Shirley) of Waynesville, Roy Valentine (Wilma) of Alcoa, TN, and Earl Valentine (Sarah Nell) of Bristol, TN; a sister-in-law, Gail Valentine, of Maryville, TN; nine grandchildren, Mark, Robin, Derek, Fawn, Lauren, Leigh-Ann, Darren, Courtney, and Brittney; and six great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Andrew, William, Joslyn, Bretton, and Madelyn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Kathy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
