Hazel Ray Ensley, age 93, died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Aston Park Health Care. A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Lillian Massie Ray. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Ensley; a son, Jerry M. Ensley; and a daughter-in-law, Lou Ensley. Hazel was a member of Hominy Baptist Church and enjoyed flower gardening. She grew beautiful African violets. Hazel was a sister-in-law to a marine who died on Iwo Jima, the mother of a marine, the grandmother of a marine, the great-grandmother of a marine, as well as the mother-in-law of a marine. She was there when each of them left home to serve their country. She laughed frequently and brought smiles and laughs to the days and lives of others. She is survived by a daughter, Frieda Smith and her husband, Gerry, of Asheville; a son, Richard Ensley of Forest Hill, MD; one sister, Nina Crocker of Rockingham, NC; eight grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with her son-in-law, Chaplain Gerry Smith and Reverend Dr. Joe Yelton officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
