Candler-Hazel Mathis Guffie, age 88, of 25 Happy Hollow Drive, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center in Asheville. She was a native of Macon County but had lived most of her life in Buncombe County. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Mary Brendle Mathis and was the wife of the late Lonnie C. Guffie, Sr., who died in June of 1995. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Neal and John Mathis, 1 sister, Mae Burns and one son, Howard Stamey. She was a member of Watauga Baptist Church in Franklin and loved to garden. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Guffie Harrin and her husband Steve of Candler, one son, Lonnie Guffie, Jr., and his wife Juanita of Leicester, 4 grandchildren, Christy Justice, Danielle Guffie, Donnie Harrin and Karla Smith and 5 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Kuehl and the staff at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Pastor Randy Melton and Reverend Neal Roland will officiate with burial following at Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of Steve and Mary Harrin, 15 Happy Hollow Drive, Candler, NC 28715. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center, P.O. Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.
