Hazel Price Hughes

Hazel Price Hughes, a dedicated nursing professional whose compassion and skills touched the lives of many, has peacefully passed away at her residence with loving family by her side.  She was born February 13, 1936 in Haywood County, and departed from this world on June 7, 2024.

Hazel was the daughter of the late Elmer and Lorena Putnam Price.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marian Ledbetter; and a sister, Lucille Morris.

She was a graduate of Waynesville Township High, and later became a graduate of Mission Belles in 1957 where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse.

Hazel's journey in the field of nursing was a remarkable one.  She embarked on her nursing career in Valdese and eventually became the nursing supervisor at Haywood Regional Medical Center, where she devoted 24 years of her life before retiring in 1998.  Her commitment to caring for others was unparalleled, leaving a lasting impact on both her colleagues and patients.

A woman of profound faith and endless generosity, Hazel found joy in simple pleasures like gardening, reading, sewing, and cooking for her beloved family.  Her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she poured her love into every moment spent with them.  Known for her giving nature and unwavering devotion to the Lord, Hazel's spirit shone brightly through her actions and words.  Hazel was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church for many years where she served the Lord as Sunday School Secretary for her class.  She also served many meals to families as a working member of CRBC Serving the Bereaved.

In addition to leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service, Hazel is survived by her daughter Gloria Brown (Hobert); sister, Elizabeth Waters (Cliff); brother, Hugh Price; five grandchildren;  17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A funeral service to honor Hazel's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Calvary Road Baptist Church with Reverend John Swanger, III officiating.  Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at Calvary Road Baptist Church in Maggie Valley.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Road Baptist Church, 2701 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC  28751.

In the tapestry of life, Hazel Price Hughes' thread was one of compassion, love, and unwavering faith.  May she rest in peace knowing that her legacy of care and kindness lives on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
