Heather Mathews

March 24, 1960 — January 28, 2012

Heather Harrison Mathews, age 51, died January 28, 2012, at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Joanna Lee Moore Harrison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Vicki Kidd-Jones. Heather worked for Haywood County Department of Social Services for four years and was a member of Canton First Baptist Church. She played many different sports at Pisgah and she played basketball for UNCA. Heather coached basketball for Canton Recreation League and then was head coach for the softball Canton Little League and won state champion in 2005. She was a member of the Sierra Club. She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Michael D. Mathews; two daughters, Courtney Scott and Logan Mathews, both of Canton; one step-daughter, Jodie Mathews of Clyde; four grandchildren, Christian and Cindy Burns, Cole Scott, and Keira Stamey; one sister, Hope Andrews of Asheville; and one brother, Carey Harrison of Candler. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Canton First Baptist Church with the Reverend James A Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canton First Baptist Church Youth Programs for Middle and High School Students, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716.
