Helen Blackwell

Helen Marie Blackwell, age 77, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Sentara Nursing Home & Rehab in Norfolk, VA. A native of Wyandotte, MI, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Gussie Ellenburg Moss. She was employed with Square "D" manufacturing and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Norfolk, VA. She graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1948. Helen was a volunteer with the Asheville V.A. Medical Center giving over 2, 000 hours of service to the patients there. After she moved to Virginia, she volunteered with the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, where she again logged over 2, 000 hours of service. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Claude A. Blackwell of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Janice Leininger and her husband, Gordon, of Mount Airy, NC; two step daughters, Rebecca Slaughter and her husband, Darrell, of Swannanoa, NC, and Janice Navin of Mount Holly, NC; two sons, William Dayton and his wife, Cathy, of Sevierville, TN and Rick Dayton and his wife, Lou Ann, of Hartsville, SC; a brother, Vernon Moss and his wife, Linda, of Orlanda, FL; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Phillip Hurst officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
