Helen Smathers DeWeese, age 83, went to meet Jesus where there is no more pain, tears, and darkness on September 19, 2008. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Margie S. Smathers. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Madge Grogan. Helen was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. Helen was a wonderful homemaker and cook. Her greatest delight was to be able to take food to people and church functions and she was very well known for her mashed potatoes, homemade rolls, and orange cakes. She also created beautiful ceramics and was district manager for Tupperware in years past. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Herschel, who she adored and treasured dearly. She is also survived by her two "boys", Michael and his wife, Shirley, and Jeffrey and his wife, Cathy, all of Asheville. They were very special to her and always made her feel very loved. Also surviving is a sister, Hilda Hardin; two special grandchildren, Amy DeWeese of Nashville, TN and Keith DeWeese and his wife, Tara, of Holly Springs, NC. One of Helen's greatest joys and in recent years her most calming element was listening to her CD with Amy playing on the piano songs she had written. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Reverend Tom Kemp and Reverend Charlie Sams officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Herschel DeWeese, 19 Lane Street.
