Helen Whitner

July 24, 1928 — July 29, 2012

Waynesville, Helen Marie Whitner, age 84, of Grandview Circle, passed away on Sunday, July 29, 2012. A native of Lumpkin County, Georgia, she had lived in Waynesville for most of her life. Marie was the daughter of the late Baxter Bryant and Mary Thompson Sherrill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Ann Moody; a son, Jerry Lee Smith and four brothers. During World War II Marie worked with the Civil Defense in Haywood County. She was employed with Autumn Care of Waynesville as a Nursing Assistant for 14 years. Marie enjoyed baking, growing flowers and her family. She was a member of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, D.A. Whitner; daughters of the heart, Caron Smith widow of Jerry Smith; stepdaughter, Betty Bridges; brother, Harley Sherrill of S.C. two grandchildren, Windy Miller, (Matt) and Travis Smith (Stefanie); five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Downs officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Travis Smith Dakota and Dalton Trantham, Matt Miller, Billy Jaynes and Chase Boggie. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MedWest- Haywood Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
