Helena C. Hendrix

Helena C. Hendrix passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, in the comfort of her home in Canton, North Carolina, surrounded by the love of her partner of 28 years, Teresa Carol Mills, and the compassionate care of Four Seasons Hospice. Born on September 18, 1959, in Key West, Florida, Helena lived a life rich with passion, dedication, and an unwavering spirit.

Helena's professional journey began by contributing her talents at the St. Petersburg Times and the Asheville Citizen-Times, and most recently as a dispatcher for Memorial Mission Hospital, where her quick thinking and calm demeanor made her an invaluable asset. Her careers exemplified her commitment to service and her love for storytelling, touching the lives of countless individuals along the way.

A native of Key West, Florida, Helena also called Pensacola and St. Petersburg home before finding her cherished residence in Haywood County, where she lived for 34 years. Her warmth and kindness endeared her to many, making a profound impact in her community. She was a beacon of light, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a hearty laugh.

Helena's vivacious personality and resilience drew people toward her. She is survived by her beloved mother, Carolyn L. Weiss of Waynesville, her dear aunt, Anne Tanaka, and her best friend of over 40 years, Joyce Godfrey, who affectionately nicknamed Helena as "Moe. Their lives, and the lives of many others who loved Helena, were enriched by knowing her; in fact, to know Helena was truly to love her.

Helena was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Eugene Richards, her stepfather, Hank Weiss, and her beloved grandmother, Opal Lively. Though they have passed, their love remains woven into Helena's legacy.

A memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of Helena will be announced at a later date.

In this moment of sorrow, we celebrate the incredible life of Helena C. Hendrix—a true friend, a devoted partner, a caring daughter, and a remarkable presence in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she left behind. Helena will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LeiomyoSarcoma Direct Research Fund (LMSDR)

The care of Helena C. Hendrix has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
