Henry Clemmer

February 25, 1924 — December 21, 2016

Waynesville, Henry Alburtus Clemmer, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Spicewood Cottages. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Robert E. Lee and Gertrude Maxwell Clemmer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marion Galke Clemmer; and a son Larry Leon Clemmer. Henry was a member of Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and was a Navy and Army Veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War. He proudly served his country for twenty years retiring in 1961 as a Master Sergeant. Post retirement he served as a Nursing Assistant with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. Later he was employed with Clemmer Construction Company in Raleigh, by his brother Ed Clemmer. After full retirement, Henry enjoyed remodeling house projects and working outside in his yard. He loved to travel to see extended family. Henry was dedicated to his family near and far. His family grew larger with his second marriage after his first wife's death (Beatrice). He enjoyed being close to all his children and grandchildren. He loved to talk to his brother and sister-in-law in California and enjoyed writing postcards to his family. Henry is survived by his daughter, Christine Tugwell, and her husband, Danny, of Waynesville; a brother, Leon Clemmer of Sebastopol, California; two stepsons, Douglas Galke, of Blowing Rock and Wayne Galke, of Raleigh; two stepdaughters, Donna Clifton, of Rolesville, and Jacqueline Gray, of Cary; nine grandchildren (Ben, Christine, Jennifer, Douglas, Angela, Brian, Tyler, Thomas and Will); and eleven great-grandchildren. A memorial service with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh with the Reverend John D. Kidd officiating. Military rites will be presented by North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard. Special thanks from the family to Stay at Home Senior Care, Wake Forest; Silver Bluff Rehabilitation, Canton, NC; and to Haywood Hospice and Palliative Care. The family wishes to extend the highest praise for the compassionate and professional care by the staff of Spicewood Cottages, Clyde NC during the last month of his care.
