Herbert Hill

Canton- Herbert Johnson Hill- age 77 of 5 Mountain View Drive Canton died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of the late John B. and Herma Boyd Hill. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oliver, Owen and J.B. Hill, Jr. Mr. Hill was employed by Champion International Paper in the maintenance department for 37 years and retired in 1988. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Canton, delivered meals on wheels and was a private pilot and flight instructor. He was an Army veteran having served in World War II from 1945 until 1947 and an Air Force veteran serving from 1950 until 1951. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy Young Hill; one daughter, Renee Howell and her husband Gary of Asheville; two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Hilda Hill both of Canton; one granddaughter, Ashley Howell and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Dr. Rick Gosnell and Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Edwin Goodson, Ray Singleton, Dean Warren, Gerald Hill, Tommy Young and William "Smokey" Cairnes. Honorary pallbearers will be Neal Leatherwood, Roger Hill, Keith Hill, Herbert Watts and Jerome Brady. At other times the family will be at the home of Frankie Best, 89 Grassy View Road, Candler. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 486 E. Marshall St., Waynesville, NC 28786.
