Herbert Hilliard

January 3, 1919 — September 22, 2010

Lake Junaluska, Herbert �Herb� Littleton Hilliard, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Valrico, Florida, he had resided in Haywood County for the past 24 years and was the son of the late Eddie and Myrtie Phillips Hilliard. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gwendolyn Ruth Hilliard; four sisters, Gertie Hilliard, Edna Everingham, Cootsie Rich, and baby sister, Jewel Hilliard. He was a US Naval veteran of World War II. He was retired from Agrico Chemical in Pierce, Florida with 42 years of service. Herb began his career as a phosphate miner and worked his way up in the company retiring as an area supervisor. Herb loved fishing and was a talented woodcraftsman and loved his granddaughter, Amy, with all his heart. He was a member of Valrico Baptist Church in Valrico, Florida. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Brown and her husband, Joe, of Lake Junaluska; brother and sister, Vera Empie and James Hilliard, both of Valrico, Florida; a beloved granddaughter, Amy Brown; and caretaker, Helen Fisher. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Mark Golden and Reverend John Swanger, III officiating. Eulogy will be by Rufus Brown. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47.
