Waynesville-Herbert Hershel "Hub" Tate, age 85, of Shelton Street, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late Glenn and Oberia Bryson Tate. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Tate, who died in 1996, and by two brothers, Harmon and Wallace Tate. He was a self employed farmer. He was a US Army veteran having served during WWII in Normandy, and received the purple heart. He was a member of the VFW Waynesville Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He is survived by a daughter, Teresa Glance and her husband, Bill of Clyde; a son, Jim Tate and his wife, Cathy of Granbury, TX; a sister, Edith Milner and her husband, Ray of Waynesville; a brother, Harley Tate and his wife, Eva of Hendersonville; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Reverend Steve Taylor will officiate. Military services will be conducted by the VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends following the services, at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 542 Iron Duff Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
