Clyde - Herman Luther Haynes, age 79, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at the Veteran's Hospital in Asheville.
He was born in Schuler, Virginia but grew up in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Herman L. Haynes Sr. and Mazie Mae Carter Haynes.
He retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. He served during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring and returning to Haywood County he loved creating beautiful things from wood including furniture and toys for his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Eula Morgan Haynes of Clyde, his daughter Lee Anna Sturkie and her husband Russell of Charlotte, his son Don Haynes and his wife Gail of Wilder, Vermont; one sister, Ruby Robinson, three grandchildren, Lisa Almond and her husband Eric of Charlotte, NC, Morgan Haynes of Missoula, Montana and Taylor Haynes presently attending the University of Hawaii; two great grandchildren Ryan and David Almond, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton. Reverend William O. "Bill" Henson and Reverend Jerry Harwell will officiate. Burial will follow at Haynes Family Cemetery in Clyde with military graveside honors. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
