Herschel Caldwell

Waynesville-Herschel Homer Caldwell, age 79, of Plott Creek Road, died Monday, April 04, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was born in the Cataloochee Valley of Haywood County, the son of the late Jarvis and Bonnie Childers Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Crawford Caldwell, who died in 1986. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the US New Jersey. He was a retired barber of over 50 years and served on the NC Barber's Board and was a part-time employee of Wells Funeral Home. He was a member of the Hazelwood Lions Club and a member of Hazelwood Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He was a volunteer for the Park Service for his beloved Cataloochee Valley and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He is survived by a daughter, Gail C. Moody, and her husband, Ray, of Atlanta, GA; a son, Terry Caldwell and his wife, Linda Cooke Caldwell, of Waynesville; a sister, Anne C. Ross of Waynesville; six brothers, Kendrick C., Raymond K., Jonathan C., J.R., and Harley D. Caldwell, all of Waynesville and Joe B. Caldwell of Fairview; three grandchildren, Will Caldwell and his wife, Michelle, and Scott and Beth Ann Moody; and two great grandchildren, Colby and Noah Caldwell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2005 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times, at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be David, Jeff, and Mike Caldwell, Dean Ross, Aaron, Greg, and Lonnie Crawford, Tommie Harris, and Roy Haynes. Memorials may be made to the Hazelwood Baptist Church, 265 Hazelwood Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786 and the American Cancer Society, 90 Stiles Road, Canton, NC 28716.
