Hettie Shelton

November 18, 1927 — October 28, 2011

Waynesville - Hettie Mae Brown Shelton, 83, of Monte Vista Drive, died surrounded by her family, on Friday, October 28, 2011, at St Joseph Medical Center. A native of Greer, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ola Mae Brown. On Friday, Hettie Mae joined her husband, Clarence Shelton in their eternal home. What a sweet reunion they must have had! Hettie Mae was a supportive wife to her husband of 63 years, loving mother to her three children, and constant caregiver for the past 54 years to her youngest son, Lavoy born with cerebral palsy. Hettie Mae was always known for her sweet spirit and ever-present smile. Her home was filled with music and the smells of something cooking on the stove. You would never leave her house without being offered something to eat. Her doors were always open whether it be a family gathering, a youth group outing, choir rehearsal or simply a friend who just wanted to drop-by to talk. Being host to countless sledding expeditions she claimed that, "she's prepared enough hot chocolate to float a battleship!" Everyone always felt welcome in her home. Though an excellent host and homemaker she did enjoy traveling with her husband. Clarence served in the Navy during WWII. So, with great pride they traveled many times across our nation to take in all its beauty. Oh, the sights they must behold today! Hettie Mae is survived by her three children, Allan Shelton and his wife, Vicky, of Waynesville; Brenda Shelton Rogers and her husband, Mike, of Waynesville; Lavoy Shelton of the home; and one brother James Brown of Lake Junaluska (a loving brother who would call, like clockwork, every night to check-up on his little sister); four grandchildren, Angela Shelton Garrett, Tony Rogers, Christy Shelton Tison, and Myra Rogers Anderson; and seven great-grandchildren, Thomas-Allan Tison, Chelsea Garrett, Aaron Anderson, Jonathan Tison, Shelton Tison, Annabeth Anderson and Mckinley Rogers A celebration of her life was held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Calvary Road Baptist Church with Reverend John H. Swanger, III, Reverend J. D. Grant and Reverend Wayne Willet officiating. Burial followed at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers were David Brown, Dale Howell, Joe Brown, Bobby Shelton, Joe Cassada and Thomas-Allan Tison. The family received friends prior to the service at the church. Hettie Mae was a lady who loved the Lord with all of her heart. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, granny, nana-nana, aunt, neighbor and friend who will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The definition of a kind, loving, gentle soul, she touched the lives of so many with her smile and generosity, and maintained her love of life and family all the way to the end. She fought a good fight and we are certain that today she stands before her Lord and Savior as He says "well done my good and faithful servant". We are thankful for every moment God gave us with her. Our hearts are heavy but our souls rejoice as we look forward to our reunion. Memorials may be made to Calvary Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 77 Sutton Loop, Waynesville, NC 28786.
