Hildegard Linnebaum Hukowski, age 88, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at her residence. A native of Emsdetten, Germany, she had lived in Haywood County since 2010 and in North Carolina since 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Linnenbaum; her husband, Alexander S. Hukowski who died on April 3, 1997 and a daughter, Eva Maria Wilhelm. Hilda grew up in Germany with six sisters and one brother. She survived World War II and married a Polish soldier, Alex Hukowski. After the war, the two owned and operated a shoemaker shop before moving to the United States and starting a new life in New York City. They lived in Long Island, New York, for over 30 years before retiring to Hendersonville, North Carolina. Hilda loved gardening, cooking and taking care of her family. Those who knew her well remember her as "Omi," a resourceful woman full of energy. Her German heritage was important to her, and she was fond of singing German songs and cooking German food. She is survived by a granddaughter, Nicole Wilhelm and her husband, Michael Beadle, of Canton; a grandson, Philippe Wilhelm of Charlotte; and a son-in-law Hugo Wilhelm of Safenwil, Switzerland. A memorial gathering and celebration of Hilda's life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2012 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.
