Hilda Tatum

October 4, 1925 — September 27, 2017

Hilda Hodges Tatum passed away peacefully on September 27, 2017, after a fulfilling, happy and energetic 91 years. Hilda was born October 4, 1925 in Leaksville, North Carolina. She was married to the love of her life, C.W. "Big John" Tatum for 63 years, until his death in 2009. Hilda's greatest joys were her children and grandchildren who she loved mightily and without condition. She was also a fiercely loyal and loving sister, aunt and friend, who would do anything for those she cared for. Hilda was the personification of "what you see is what you get," and there was never a question about where you stood - but if you were lucky enough to be high on the list, it was a lifelong and sincere blessing. Those who knew Hilda from close (or from afar) will remember her as a true force of nature, a bright light and the source of endless laughter and happiness. Hilda was a devout fan of any and all Carolina Tarheel sports, and could be heard singing the fight song at the top of her lungs throughout any close competition. Hilda was an avid gardener and the envy of her Meadowbrook Drive neighbors for over 50 years.

The world will not be the same without her, but Hilda will be at peace and finally rejoined with her husband, C.W. Tatum, seven brothers, and one sister who preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, John Franklin Tatum, of Southport, North Carolina; her daughter, Robin Tatum Currin, of Asheville, North Carolina; and her grandsons, John Paul Morris, Samuel Tatum Morris, and Dylan Webb Tatum.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at The Farm of Norcross School & Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 with a reception to follow. Memorials in Hilda's memory can be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 221 N. Main St. Hendersonville, NC 28792.
