Homer Messer

Homer D. Thomas "Tommy " Messer, age 59, of Troy Court went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at the VA Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Harrison, Sr. and Printha Johnson Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kendra Davis; two sisters, Bonnie Woods and Ethel Lillian Messer; four brothers, Oscar, John, Ernest and David. Tommy was a former employee of Buckeye Construction and Wolfpen Associates. Tommy enjoyed farming and loved to camp, fish and travel. He especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a talented craftsman and loved working with his flowers. He was a US Army Veteran receiving two purple hearts while serving in the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lucy Mintz Messer; three daughters, Delores Hasting and her husband, Rick, of Clyde, Sandy Watts and her husband, Mike, of Canton, and Donna Davis of Clyde; three sisters, Jane Curtis and her husband Joe, of Waynesville, Hattie Garland and her husband, Jim, of Johnson City, TN, and Bobbie Parker and her husband, Boyd, of Waynesville; two brothers, James Harrison Messer Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Waynesville and Verlin Messer Sr. and his wife, Patsy, of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Shawn Watts of Canton, Scott Rector and wife, Christine, of Canton and Holly Bradley of Clyde; three great-grandchildren, Tim, Sierra, and Austin Rector, all of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Hazelwood Church of God with the Reverend Daniel Rushing and Reverend Johnny Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with full Military Honors conducted by a detachment from Fort Bragg Army Base. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday evening at Wells Funeral Home Waynesville. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Edward Moody, Scott Rector, Larry Garland, Jimmy Garland, Verlin Messer, Jr., Shawn Watts, Joe Mull, Billy Mintz, Robbie Fleming, Roger Fleming, Mike Watts, Brian Green, and James Messer.
