Canton - Honea A. Yates, age 97, died Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a native of Boone, NC but had resided in Haywood County for 66 years and was a son of the late Daniel V. and Betty Presnell Yates. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Kenneth Yates; three sisters, Ida Baird, Hursta Smith, and Hazel Hill; one brother, Benny Yates; four half-sisters, Pearl Oliver, Rosey Lura, Minnie Presnell, and Nora Guy, and one grandson, Jeffrey Brooks. Honea retired in 1972 from Champion International with 31 ½ years of service. He was a fisherman, an entertainer, and a jokester. He loved and cared for his family very much. He is survived by his wife of 78 years, Ethel Cunningham Yates; three daughters, Ruby Brooks, Carolyn Sutton and her husband, Robert, and Betty Y. Henderson and her friend, Ron Mason, all of Canton; four sons, Eugene Yates and his wife, Tiny, Horace Yates and his wife, Gail, all of Canton, Charles Yates and Jerry Yates and his wife, Ann, all of Waynesville; one sister, Florence Robinson and her husband, Ray, of Canton; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2007 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Bon-a-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at 168 Newfound Street. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plains United Methodist Church General Fund, 2029 Newfound Road, Canton, NC 28716.
