Candler, Houston Charles Blackwell, age 83, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2010 at Laurels of Greentree Ridge in Asheville. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Clarence Houston and Icie Morgan Blackwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Retha Robinson Blackwell, who died in 2006 and a daughter, Alpha Downs, who died in 2006. Houston retired from American Enka Plant/ BASF after 42 years of service as a Safety Engineer. He was a volunteer with the Enka Fire Department and served as chief for many years, and served on the First Board of Directors for the Enka Candler Fire and Rescue. Houston also served on the Board of Directors for the Enka Lake Club. Houston served as Scout Master and Commissioner for the Boy Scouts and was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son, Robert "Bob" Blackwell and his wife, Carol, of Candler; a brother, Claude A. Blackwell, of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jay Bissett officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
