Howard Campbell

Maggie Valley, NC-Howard Edsel Campbell, age 84, died Sunday, October 17, 2004 at his residence. He originally lived in Garden City, Michigan and attended Fordson High School in Dearborn. After graduation, he attended Eastern Michigan University where he met his future wife, Barbara Hayes. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past January. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS Lenoir, and then returned to work for the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. After 36 years he retired as a Financial Analyst and moved to Maggie Valley, NC. Golf was his favorite recreation, but he was active in many local affairs. He was treasurer and road chairman for the Home Owners Association, delivered Meals on Wheels, and more recently was treasurer of the Jane Marville Junior Golf Tournament. His great gift was his voice. Howard is survived by his wife, Barbara Hayes Campbell; his daughter, Deborah Tucker of Richmond, VA; two sons, Douglas Campbell of Chicago, IL, and Dennis Campbell of Frankfort, MI; two sisters, Betty Phipps of Englewood, FL, and Arleen Smith of Sarasota, FL; his brother, Don Campbell, of Maggie Valley, NC; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Maggie Valley United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jeremy I. Troxler officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, 4192 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751, or to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 931, Waynesville, NC 28786. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville, NC is in charge of arrangements.
