Howard Wilson Grogan, age 87, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Mission Hospitals – St. Joseph Campus. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Asa and Effie Queen Grogan. He retired from Champion International in 1983 with 33 years of service and was a Champion Old Timer. Howard was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church where he served as custodian, led the music, and "rang the bell". He was a United States Army veteran during World War II serving in the European Theater. On October 3, he traveled to Washington, DC with local WWII veterans to visit the WWII memorial. It was an unforgettable memory. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris "Dot" Ensley Grogan; a son, Rick Grogan and his wife, Karen, of Canton; two daughters Sheila G. Sharpe and her husband, Terry, of Monroe and Marcia G. Taylor and her husband, Rocky, of Hickory; a sister, Geraldine Pace of Spartanburg, SC; a brother, Wayne Grogan of Winter Haven, FL; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Spring Hill Baptist Church with the Reverend Brad Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
