Howard Harlow

Maggie Valley, Howard "Doc" Reed Harlow, age 82, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at his residence. A native Columbus, Indiana, he had resided in Haywood County since 1977. He was the son of the late Howard and Pearl Phillips Harlow. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by his sister, Francis Dailey and a brother, Edward Harlow. He was a US Navy Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Doc was a Professor of Business and taught at Western Carolina, Eastern Michigan University, Indiana University and Doc retired from Georgia College State University. He was a member of VFW, American Legion, and the Elks Lodge. He loved singing Karaoke especially, Frank Sinatra songs, "My Way" and "New York, New York". He is survived by his second wife of 32 years, Connie Durand Harlow; a daughter, Melinda Mimms of Waynesville; a son, Jeff Harlow of Sylva; a sister, Romona Harlow and a brother, Phil Harlow both of Columbus, Indiana and three grandchildren, Shannon, Nathan and Kelly. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 5202 Commander Relief Fund, 216 Miller Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or American Legion Post 47, 171 Legion Street, Waynesville, NC or the Elks Lodge, P.O. Box 825, Waynesville, NC 28786.
