Waynesville, William Howard Liner, age 81, of 199 Liner Cove Road, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Silver Bluff Village Nursing Home following a brief illness. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jerry Liner, Sr. and Georgia Rathbone Liner and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Norris Liner, who died in 2000; a stepson, Tim Alexander, who died in 2012; and a sister, Mary Ann Liner. He received his degree in civil engineering in 1953 from NC State University and joined his father's business, Jerry Liner Construction Company. In 1964, Howard founded Haywood Contracting Company, Inc. which completed numerous construction projects throughout Western North Carolina. He was also a past member of Haywood County EDC and served on the NC Code Qualification Board. He is survived by his wife, Nan T. Alexander Liner; three sons, Tommy Liner and his wife, Teresa, of Waynesville, Kenny Liner of Lake Junaluska, and Jay Liner and his wife, Robin, of Weaverville; three step-daughters, Lisa Wyatt and her husband, David, of Highlands, Vicki Stokes of Charlotte, and Rachel Van Horn and her husband, Chris, of Otto; a step-son, Wes Alexander and his wife, Norma, of Gainesville, Georgia; a step-daughter-in-law, Trudy Alexander, of Highlands; one sister, Dorothy Welch of Ormond Beach, Florida; one brother, Jerry Liner, Jr. of Dahlonega, Georgia; 24 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles W. "Chuck" Wilson, II and Pastor Jim Dean officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
