Waynesville, Howard Robert Phillips, age 88, of Tumbling Fork Road, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Maggie Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert and Fannie Cagle Phillips. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sally Kate Bryson Phillips, who passed away in 2013; three sisters, Ruth Parton, Glennie Green and Velma Silvers; and three brothers, Wilson, Bobby and Clifford Phillips. Howard was a US Army veteran. He retired from Lea Industries with 24 years service and later was employed with the D.O.T. for twelve years. Howard enjoyed wood carving, making Gunstocks, hunting, fishing and walking the mountains. He was a member of Hemphill Baptist Church. Howard is survived by a daughter, Karen Warren and her husband, Dan, of Cruso; two sons, Robert Kyle Phillips and Michael Howard Phillips both of Hemphill; a brother, Ed Phillips of Waynesville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2015 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jake Cagle, Reverend Jerry Nelson, Reverend Larry Reeves and Reverend Ted Reeves officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
