Howard Putnam

December 13, 1943 — May 18, 2005

Howard Luther Putnam, age 61 of 14 Mitchell Street, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Haywood County and the son of Lula Lusk Burnette of Candler. Howard was unexpectedly taken from his loving family on this earth and received into the loving arms of his eternal family on the golden streets of Heaven. He will always be remembered as a loving and very giving soul to all who knew him. His family will miss him immensely and he will definitely be cherished fondly by his only grandson and sidekick, Blake. He was owner and operator of Putnam Carpets and Cabinets that was destroyed by fire in 2000. He was a member of West Canton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and an active participant in years past in the Royal Ambassadors. He was a member of the VFW Post #5198 and had just been elected as post commander. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded two bronze service stars and a national defense medal. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann Warren Putnam; a daughter, Renee Putnam of Canton; a son, Chad Wayne Putnam of the home; three sisters, Virgie Head of Canton, Geneva Tabor and Tilda Bryson both of White Pine, TN; two brothers, Robert Putnam of Clyde and Tommy Putnam of Asheville; a grandson, "John" Blake Rhinehart and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Matthew Pruett officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #47 and VFW Post #5202. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his daughter, Renee Putnam, 30 Valley Hill Drive. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the VFW Children's Christmas Fund, 16½ Watts Street, Canton, NC 28716.
