Howell Eugene Pless, age 85, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2011 at his daughter's residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Carlton and Flora McElrath Pless and was also preceded in death by one sister, Judy Donofrio and two brothers, Lewis and Ben Pless. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 61. Howell retired from Champion International and enjoyed woodworking, carving, and painting. He is survived by his wife, Edith Worley Pless; two daughters, Vicki Cole and her husband, Tim, of Waynesville and Linda Pless of Durham; one stepson, Charles Queen, of Canton; four stepdaughters, Vicki and Paula Mason, of Canton, Sharon Herman of Tennessee, and Deb Harper of Asheville; two sisters, Aileen Kelling of Florida and Linda Haiges of Illinois; two brothers, Neil Pless of Canton and Robert Pless of Raleigh; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. Graveside services will be held at Noon on Friday, September 9, 2011 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with the Reverend Gary Putnam officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p .m. on Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 61, P.O. Box 1321, Canton, NC 28716.
