Canton

Canton - Iris Welch Clark, age 95, passed away on Saturday, January 9, 2021.

She was the daughter of the late Cletus and Ruth Ann Everhart Welch.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Bud Welch; and a sister, Elizabeth Welch Tate.  Iris was also preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life for 67 years, Walter Calvin Clark. Walter and Iris attended and were active members of Canton First Baptist Church for over 70 years. In her later years, Iris loved singing and harmonizing her favorite hymns.   Walter and Iris enjoyed spending time together playing golf, walking the Canton River trail, and dancing.  In fact, each Saturday night, they had a standing date to dance along with Lawrence Welk.

Iris was a homemaker in every sense of the word.  Besides taking care of her family, she loved cooking, sewing, and making crafts.  Nothing pleased her more than to take her creations to local Craft Stores and make a sell!  She and her good friend, Barbara Edwards spent wonderful hours crafting together.  Summers were spent cultivating and enjoying her favorite flowers.  She never met a flower she didn’t love!  She was active in local Ladies Golf Clubs and volunteered at Haywood County Hospital Auxiliary.

In her later years, Iris enjoyed visits and cards from family and friends.  She especially loved visits from her grand dogs, Calvin and Sophie Grace!

Iris is survived by her daughters, Lynn Clark Horne (Ryan) of Waynesville and Marti Clark-Clonts (Mitch) of Lake Junaluska.  Also surviving is a grandson, Austin Cameron Clonts; and great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Clonts.  Iris is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Iris’s life will be planned and announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canton First Baptist Church, 74 Academy St., Canton, NC  28716

The care of Mrs. Clark has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Canton and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com
