Iris Scarborough

April 8, 1915 — November 13, 2007

Clyde-Iris Chafin Scarborough, age 92, died on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Crawford, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Thaddeus O. Chafin, Sr. and Bonnie Mae Hughes Chafin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Larry H. Cagle; second husband, Steve B. Scarborough; two brothers, Thad O. Chafin, Jr., who was killed in World War II and Robert M. Chafin, Sr.; and one niece, Rebecca Jane Chafin. She was employed as a receptionist for The Mountaineer for 25 years and later at the Haywood County Clerk of Courts Office for ten years. She was a member of Clyde Central United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women Circle 4 and a member of the choir for 57 years. Iris was also a past Worthy Matron of the Clyde Order of the Eastern Star of which she was a 70-year member, and she logged more than 9000 volunteer hours at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She is survived by nephew, Robert "Miles" Chafin, Jr. and his wife, Patricia Birchfield Chafin, of Ashdown, AR, niece, Elaine Chafin Madison and her husband, Jim, of Virginia Beach, VA, and nephew, John Lyndon Chafin, of Clyde; great nieces, Misty C. Garland, Corinne Redmond, Michele C. Summey; great nephews, Ricky Redmond, Robbie Chafin, III, Patrick O. Chafin, and John Thaddeus Hunter Chafin; two great-great nieces; two great-great nephews; a special first cousin, Ralph Bridges and his wife, Margaret, of Lexington, GA; and extended family, Steve Scarborough, Jr. and his wife, Florence, of Waynesville, David Sizemore and his wife, Linda, of Sylva, and Dick Boyd of Waynesville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Clyde Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Tingle, Revered Jim Hart, and Reverend Chris Westmoreland officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services. Serving as pallbearers, Doug Moore, Ronald P. Scruggs, William "Bill" Shook, and James Mashburn. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Gillis, J.D. Oliver, and Lyndon Smathers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clyde Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 356, Clyde, NC 28721.
