J. D. SMITH

Clyde-J. D. Smith, age 77, of Bald Creek Road, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at Mountain Area Hospice Solace in Asheville.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Harrison and Tennie Mae Russell Smith. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and one grandchild. He retired from Champion in 1987 after 19 years as a security guard. He was a member of James Chapel where he served as deacon and choir director. He was a veteran of the US Navy during World War II. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Brown Smith, of Clyde; three daughters, Glenda Henderson and her husband, Terry, of Valdese, NC, Lynn Messer and her husband, Robert, of Clyde, and Sheila Griffin and her husband, Jim, of Canton; one son, Donald Ray Smith, and his wife, Linda, of Waynesville; five sisters, Grace Haney of Waynesville, Ruth Hannah of Canton, Edith James and Dorothy Clark of Clyde, and Shirley Dowdle of Hendersonville; one brother, Earl Smith, of Clyde; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at James Chapel with Reverend Charles Cable, Reverend Alan Davis, and Heath Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Community Cemetery. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.
