Lake Junaluska, Jack James Belcher, age 89, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Spicewood Cottages. A native of Swain County and a former resident of Canton and Ft. Lauderdale, he was the son of the late Joseph James and Carrie Jones Belcher and was also preceded in death by one sister, Marie Foy. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. Jack flew 65 missions in the Pacific during the 9 months of the invasion of the Philippines and patrolled during the Okinawa campaign in the drive toward Tokyo. He worked at Champion Papers and was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. Jack was an avid golfer and bowler in his prime and had a wonderful sense of humor and was loved by family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Sara B. Jones and her husband, Paul, of Lake Junaluska; five grandchildren, Stacey Janney (Matt), Wesley Limbo (Denise), Julie Funderud (Steven), and Brian and Sarah Jones; seven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Jerry and Pamela Ledford; and a special friend and companion, Marjorie Preble. The family would like to recognize Jack's family of caregivers at Spicewood Cottages. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim McConnell and Reverend Woody Adams officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the National Guard and VFW Post 5202. Inurnment will be at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior in the church venue.
